Parable Of The Sower

One day a farmer went out to plant some seeds. He threw seeds all over the place. Some of the seeds fell on a path and were eaten up by birds before they could grow. Some of the seeds fell on rocky ground and started to grow, but as soon as the sun came up the plants withered and died because their roots weren’t deep enough. Some of the seeds fell in the same place some thorns were growing. The thorns grew up and choked the plants. But some of the seeds fell on good soil where they grew, and grew, and grew!

So, what does this story mean?
Well the seed is like the Word of God and the soil is a person’s heart.

The seed that fell on the path is like when someone hears the Word of God and before it has time to grow, it gets snatched away. These are people who are not ready to hear God’s Word. It never has a chance to grow roots and they are not interested in what you have to say.

The seed in the rocks is like a person who hears the Word of God and gets excited about it, but because it doesn’t go deep down into their hearts, when bad things happen, or when something else comes along that excites them, they forget what they’ve heard.

The seed in the thorns is like someone who hears the Word of God, but they are so worried about everything else going on in their life that the Word slowly gets forgotten and never has a chance to grow and help them become all that Jesus wants them to be.

The seed that fell in the good soil is like someone who hears the Word of God and lets it change every part of their life. They grow big and strong in all the promises God has for them.

So, when we talk about God with our friends, we need to remember that not everyone’s heart will be like the good soil.

Some will not hear it at all. Some will hear it and be excited at first, but get distracted by everything else going on. Some will hear it and be too afraid of other people to ever let it change their lives.

But some will hear it, and they will meet Jesus and invite Him into their life.

So, don’t be discouraged if people don’t listen when you talk about Jesus. Just keep throwing your seed out there and know that some of it will fall on good soil.
