The History of ChristinglesThe Christingle tradition can be traced back to 1747 and a German bishop, Johannes de Watteville and the custom went around the world with the church. The bishop was looking for a simple way to show the happiness that Jesus brought to people and did this using a candle with a red ruff.In Moravian churches, the Christingle Service is usually held on the Sunday before Christmas or on Christmas Eve. The idea came from John Pensom who was also known as "Mr Christingle"! People didn't think the service would work as making the Christingles would be too complicated - but they were wrong! The custom has spread through to all kinds of churches and is one of the most common and popular Christmas services in the UK, especially among children. Christingles services still normally raise money for children's charities. Over the years the symbolism of the Christingle grew into what's known as a Christingle today. Here's what the different parts of the Christingle represent:
What is the Meaning of Christingles?Christingle is a joyful celebration that brings families and communities together to share the light of Jesus and spread a message of hope. -Christian Society
A bishop in Germany wanted to give the children a symbol to show that their happiness came from Jesus. Christingles are used by some Christian people at church during Advent. They celebrate Jesus being the Light of the World. The word Christingle means 'Christ's light'. - St Teresas New Castle
