The Parable of the Battery

The "Parable of the Battery" is a modern spiritual and psychological analogy comparing faith and resilience to a rechargeable battery. It illustrates how we must intentionally plug into a higher source to handle life's demands, and warns that we will eventually drain and fail if we never recharge.

The Parable of the Battery

By Charles E. Vorwaller

Have you ever been in a car that broke down on the road and would not work? This can be very frustrating. In comparison, as we go through life, we face challenges every day. These are just as frustrating.

One cause of a car breaking down is often a weakened battery. In a similar way, our ability to deal with life’s challenges can be affected by a weakened testimony.

Battery

Is a souce of power

Small and quiet

Has two terminal posts

Both terminal posts are required to make the battery work

Lack of use weakens the battery

Corrosioin on terminal posts will prevent power temporally

We must clean terminal post to restore power

Another fully charged battery can restore the power of a weaker battery

Jumper cables provide the connection between two power sources

Testimony

Is a source of power

Small and quiet

Has to main parts – prayer and scriptures

Both scripture and prayer are required to strengthen your testimony

Not sharing our testimony can weaken it

Discouragement prevents us from praying and reading the scriptures

We must recommit to daily scripture study and personal and family prayer

Another person’s strong testimony can restore a weaker testimony

Heavenly Father provides the connection to us through prayer and scriptures

The parable breaks down into a few essential lessons:
The Need to Charge: Just as a smartphone dies without its charger, a life lacking spiritual or mental maintenance loses its strength. Regular practices like prayer, meditation, or quiet time act as the power cord.
Internal Capacity: Your "battery" represents your faith and resilience. When fully charged, you have the inner power to face sudden tests or challenges without collapsing.
The Danger of Draining: Attempting to run on low power often leads to burnout and frustration.
Residual Charge: Some variations of the parable suggest that even "dead" or abandoned batteries hold a tiny, residual charge. This serves as a reminder that it is never too late to clear away rubbish, get a "jump start," and restore your connection to your power source.

The Parable of the Car Battery

The Parable of the Car Battery:
Preaching in the kingdom of Heaven is like a car battery:
      1. Positive needed.
      2. Negative needed.
      3. It gets you going.
      4. Maintenance needed.
      5. Being connected is needed.
      6. But…and this might be the most important…the parts of the car that are started by the battery (i.e., engine) are not intended to continuously rely upon the battery to operate – just needed to get started. If we are only energized while hearing the preacher (or while doing the preaching) and don’t operate after it is over, the problem is not that we need a new battery. The rest of the car needs fixing. He who has ears to ear, let him hear. And start those engines! And then run the race!
