Holy Saturday

In the Polish tradition and many of the eastern European countries, Easter baskets are blessed the day before Easter, known as Holy Saturday. Baskets are filled with a sampling of the foods to be eaten on Easter Sunday. The contents vary according to its owners.
A traditional Polish Easter Basket contains butter in the shape of a lamb or cross to represent the good will of Christ. A loaf of bread symbolizes the Bread of Life. Horseradish reminds us of the Passion. Decorated eggs represent the Resurrection. A sausage product symbolizes God’s generosity. Ham represents joy and abundance. Bacon represents God’s overabundance of mercy. Salt reminds us of prosperity and that people are the flavor of the earth. Cheese represents Christian moderation. A candle reminds us that Jesus is the Light of the World. Spring greens and ribbons decorate the basket as a sign of new life in the Resurrection. Many families add vegetables, candies, wine, and other goodies integral to their own celebration.
